Physicists at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have built an enhanced version of an experimental atomic clock based on a single aluminum atom that is now the world's most precise clock, more than twice as precise as the previous pacesetter based on a mercury atom. The new aluminum clock would neither gain nor lose one second in about 3.7 billion years.

Electronics producers from all over the world met at productronica 2009 in Munich from November 10 to 13, 2009. In spite of the economic crisis, the trade fair attracted 1,150 exhibitors and additionally represented companies (2007: 1,477). productronica therefore suffered a much lower decrease than many companies in the industry. The exhibition area amounted to 75,000 square meters in seven halls. 39 per cent of exhibitors came from abroad. The internationality of the trade fair therefore remained at the same high level from the previous event.

Echoing estimates made by the SIA (Semiconductor Industry Association) earlier this week, IC Insights this morning reported that Q3 showed strong seasonal demand, following a Q2 inventory replenish phase. All in all, the market research company reported that the top 20 suppliers showed an averaged 19% growth rate in the September quarter, equal to the growth the top 20 showed in the June quarter. Back in spring it was anticipated that productronica 2009 would attract around 1,000 exhibitors. However, 1,150 companies will now actually present their products and innovations during the world’s leading trade fair for innovative electronics production at the New Munich Trade Fair Center from November 10 to 13, 2009. 1,126 exhibitors and 24 additionally represented firms from 30 countries are expected. The economic crisis is also having a serious impact on productronica. The amount of exhibition space at the trade fair has dropped since 2007 and will now amount to a total of 75,000 square meters in seven exhibition halls. Due to understandable reasons, a large number of exhibitors will have smaller stands this year.

The "munich electronics summit" on November 10, 2009 will be the first meeting in Munich of top international managers in the electronics and electronics production industries and their customers. During productronica, the world's leading trade fair for innovative electronics production, around 50 CEOs and managing directors from the electronics and electronics production industries will discuss future strategies for companies in these industries and talk about tomorrow's trends. They will be accompanied this year by Dr. Ram Charan, one of the world's leading management consultants and the guest of honor at the munich electronics summit. The event mentor will be Dr. Jürgen Gromer, the long-standing President of Tyco Electronics; the host will be Klaus Dittrich, Managing Director of Messe München GmbH. The munich electronics summit will be held annually in future, i.e. alternating between the two world s leading trade fairs productronica and electronica.
