The level of integration of 5G base stations in the FR1 frequency range is increasing, as a new generation of base stations, designated the 1-O type, is becoming more and more common. The 1-O type base stations operate at FR1 frequency range and they have antenna arrays with integrated transceivers, without any access to internal RF ports. This requires all conformance and production testing to be performed over-the-air (OTA). However, OTA testing can be technically challenging.

Most of the requirements for higher data rates stem from sensors like cameras around the car, 5G Telematic units (TCUs) and networking backbones for multiple domain controllers. MultiGBASE-T1 Ethernet standard meets these needs by including 2.5G, 5G and 10G speeds. Compared to 1000BASE-T1, MultiGBASE-T1 uses PAM4 (4 levels) modulation with symbol rates of 1.4, 2.8 and 5.6 GHz. The Open Alliance TC15 PMA compliance test specification addressing this standard is still in a draft state.

Rohde & Schwarz announces new functionalities to its Advanced Voice Quality Assurance system (R&S AVQA), extending the functionality from IP to radio frequency (RF). This takes the advantage of the ED-137 protocol with information such as Frequency ID or Radio Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI). With this information, AVQA provides great new insights into the RF channel.

In order to realize industry 4.0 use cases such as mobile robots or automated guided vehicles, industrial network deployments must guarantee very high availability, reliability, and in many cases low latency communications. 5G NR technology including its latest enhancements specified in 3GPP Release 16 enables ultra-reliable low latency communications (URLLC), ideal for private campus network deployments. However, as with any wireless system, the communication link is subject to potential interference on the deployed spectrum bands.
